PCU 4: Collaboration, Instructional Component 4.5 Student Guide for Populating Weather Forecast Office Wind Grids Using Forecast Guidance from Tropical Cyclone Centers
(Using TPC's TCM Grids in IFPS) Rick Knabb, TPC SOO Jack Beven, Mark DeMaria, James Franklin, Jim Gross, Scott Kiser, Miles Lawrence, Max Mayfield, Brian Motta, Richard Pasch, Ed Rappaport, Pablo Santos, David Sharp, Scott Spratt, Stacy Stewart Felix Navejar,Melinda Bailey,Heather Hauser,Ken Johnson,Dave Novak,Andy Patrick,Irv Watson, Dan Lindsey,Scott Lindstrom,Mark DeMaria,Harvey Thurm,Ross Dickman,Stephanie Fauver, Paul Houle, Michael Rusnak, Anthony Siebers, John Billet 1) Introduction The material in this session is designed to provide local office staff an overview of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Tropical Prediction Center's (TPC) role in the Interactive Forecast Preparation System (IFPS) methodology used at Warning and Forecast Offices (WFOs). The TPC produces "TCM grids" which are used to create the official and forecast databases in preparation of graphical forecast grids. Dr. Rick Knabb, SOO at TPC, is the instructor for this lesson and has created this training session based on his IFPS Methodology Workshop presentation. This training is offered to facilitate the collaboration between TPC and field forecasters and hydrologists. Use of TPC TCM grids is different than other national centers guidance in that it places limitations/boundaries in the forecast which will affect forecasters' IFPS methodology during tropical cyclone events.
